A Patriotic Tipple

February 20th, 2012 by Fred Ray · No Comments

Since we are honoring presidents today we might take a moment of two to do it with spirit(s). The two whose birthdays fall near today—George Washington and Abe Lincoln—both liked to imbibe a wee dram now and again. Washington even made it and was by some accounts at one time the largest distiller in the new country. Long Tom Jefferson also liked a shot or two on special occasions.

Both of these amazing men share something in common – they both were fans of tipping back a drink to celebrate their successes, on and off the battlefield. And given the list of accomplishments each of these titans of history had to their names, one can imagine they tipped back more than a few. And their sauce of choice? Whiskey.

Turns out you can even drink what they drank, if you can afford it. No word on what Jeff Davis liked, but Robert E. Lee had his own opinion of grain spirits: “I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.” So let’s raise a glass to our greatest presidents tonite.
