Siege of Petersburg: Beyond the Crater Progress Report:

February 19, 2011

It’s been quite awhile (almost a year!) since I last covered the goings on at my other Civil War site, The Siege of Petersburg Online: Beyond the Crater.   A LOT has been happening over there, including:

  1. Siege of Petersburg Diary and Letter Entries, with the current focus on Octave Bruso’s diary stretched over much of the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns.
  2. The addition of numerous Orders of Battle from the George Nafziger collection…
  3. …which is meant to hold visitors over until more work is completed on my detailed Siege of Petersburg First Offensive and Second Offensive orders of battle are much closer to completion.  With that said, I’ve completed the First Division, Union II Corps for the First Offensive, and I’m doing the same for the Second Offensive.
  4. Numerous additions have been made to the Siege of Petersburg Bibliography page, including a lot of focus on Union and Confederate regimental histories.
  5. And, as always, the report of the day from the Official Records continues to chug along relentlessly.  My goal is to host all of the reports from Part 1 of Volumes XL, XLII, and XLVI within the next two years or so.  I’m about a third of the way into Volume XLII’s reports.  The correspondence, forming parts 2 and 3 for those volumes, 6 books in all, will begin after the reports have all been posted.

If anyone enjoys transcribing letters, diaries, newspaper accounts, or other primary sources, I encourage you to Contact me at my Beyond the Crater address.  If anyone has any suggestions for the site I’d love to hear them.  My goal is to learn all I can about the Siege of Petersburg and share as I go.  All are welcome to join in the process.
