September 14, 1864

Brig. Gen. Joshua Blackwood Howell, USA, dies near Petersburg, VA, from injuries suffered September 12, 1864, when he fell off his horse, being promoted to Brig. Gen. the day of his injury.

Skirmish near Berryville, VA, as Lieut. Gen. Richard H. Anderson, CSA, and his army corps again leaves for the Petersburg, VA, siege lines, depleting Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, of much needed men.  Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, is facing the same situation as Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, is extending his Union siege lines around Petersburg, VA.
