Today In The Petersburg Campaign

May 24, 1864

Action at Wilson’s Wharf, north side of the James River, below Fort Powhatan, VA, as Maj. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee’s Confederate attack is repulsed by the two all Black Federal regiments garrisoned there.

    I appreciate your comments on my listing of Western Civil War books. I am sure you’re right in saying that not all of my choices are the best representatives of a particular campaign. I should have explained that I was seeking to get a list of the best one-volume treatments. I’ve heard good things about the Vicksburg and Port Hudson studies you mentioned and someday quite later in my life I hope to sit down and enjoy them.
