Civil War Book Acquisitions: January 2013, Part 1

Editor’s Note: Civil War Book Acquisitions is an ongoing series which allows me to highlight new books I’ve recently acquired and give readers an idea of upcoming Civil War books.

The Battle of Petersburg
by Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War

0-527-17558-7

Published in 1977, reprint from original. Out of Print.

Kraus Reprint Company

Publication Date: 1977

TOCWOC’s Take: The title is a bit misleading, but this is essentially a reprinting of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War’s findings on the Battle of the Crater.  This testimony can also be found in the Official Records, Volume 40, Part 1, Report #4: Record of the Court of Inquiry on the Mine Explosion during the Battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864.

The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign: Breaking the Backbone of the Rebellion (Second Edition)
by A. Wilson Greene

978-1-57233-610-0

The University of Tennessee Press

Publication Date: 2008

TOCWOC’s Take: I already had the first edition of this book, published by Savas Publishing around 2000 or 2001. I had long been meaning to purchase this updated second edition which was produced by the University of Tennessee Press in 2008.  Greene’s book (either edition) covers the last battles around Petersburg in March-April 1865 in great detail.  Particular attention is paid to the Union Sixth Corps “Breakthrough” on April 2, 1865.

Glorious Contentment: The Grand Army of the Republic, 1865-1900
by Stuart McConnell

0-8078-2025-3

The University of North Carolina Press

Publication Date: 1992

TOCWOC’s Take: While this is not necessarily a Civil War book, it is tied inextricably to the Civil War experiences of the men who make up its subject.  As I go through the reminiscences of men on both sides in the late 1800’s for my Petersburg site, I wanted to learn more about the postwar organizations veterans joined and how those organizations affected the veterans.

    Hi Brett. Studying history full-time
@ University College Dublin. I’d be
    Particularly interested in your
    recommendations of Academic books
on the ACW – books with recommended
reading lists and source references. Of
special interest at the moment, would
    be analysis/opinion/debate on the
motives for war on both sides. Keep up
the good work Brett. Many thankees
and I’ll probably cross paths with Ye at
    the ACWGC. :0) Pat.
