Nafziger Collection of Civil War (and other) Orders of Battle Now FREE Online

UPDATE 2: Kathy Buker pointed out in the comments below that the official URL for the Nafziger collection is: http://www.cgsc.edu/carl/nafziger.htm

UPDATE: I’ve finally managed to download all of the OOB files via a script provided by a friend and noticed that many of the American Civil War orders of battle are missing for some reason.  I’ve emailed George Nafziger to see what he knows about this issue.  So while Civil War wargamers may not have as much use for these OOBs without the missing Civil War files, many of which I bought several years ago on the Petersburg Campaign, it IS still a very, very useful source for wargamers.  I looked through some of the orbats for the American Revolution, for instance, and saw much more detailed unit strengths than I realized were available.  If any further updates come along, I’ll keep everyone posted.

I just learned recently that George Nafziger’s massive collection of orders of battle (or orbats) for various wars throughout history have been made available for FREE online.  I have ordered quite a few orders of battle from George’s site over the years for my Petersburg Campaign Project and I’m amazed at his generosity in making the collection available to everyone.  This is an absolutely amazing resource for wargamers, with numerous wars through the centuries heavily represented.  The files are stored on one page as a large number of links to PDF files.  A finding aid in PDF format lists all of the OOBs available.  I wholeheartedly encourage TOCWOC readers to go check this out.  Many of these orders of battle are available within the Official Records, but Mr. Nafziger took the time to painstakingly transcribe them and put them all in one place for ease of use.

Hat tip to Project Leipzip 1813 for mentioning this exciting news for wargamers and researchers alike!

The listing page for Nafziger is not the official website, this is – http://www.cgsc.edu/carl/nafziger.htm. There is a search capability on this splash page.

      Kathy,

Thanks for that information. The issue there is that the search function only allows a search of the titles from my trial and error, which isn’t as useful as a full search of all the text. I also noticed that many of the Civil War orbats I ordered from George Nafziger in 2004 are missing for some reason. Do you know who I could contact about the missing Civil War orbats?

    Brett,
what do you think of the quality of Nafziger’s CW OBs?

    Drew,

For the most part they are simply one to one copies of what you’d see in the Official Records. You’ll see a typo here and there, but they are solid, at least the Petersburg Campaign ones with which I’ve worked in detail.
