Does anyone know how to install Sierra’s Civil War Generals 2 on a Windows XP rig? I sure don’t, and half an hour of trial and error has gotten me exactly nowhere. Unfortunately, I’m not a patient guy, and that’s about as much time as I’m willing to waste.

I’m trying to run the setup.exe file from the CD, and nothing is happening. I’ve tried Windows 95 compatibility mode, DOSBox, and some other stuff. If anyone knows the answer, I’d definitely appreciate it. I’m downloading the game from The Underdogs as we speak, so I’ll see if I can get that version to run.

I dlld-ed it, got it to work but within 10 secs I got an error message. I guess it’s just too old.

    Edwin,

I downloaded the version from The Underdogs, but I still couldn’t get any executable files that came with the game to run. It’s not a big loss. CWG2 produced some of the least historical results of any ACW game I’ve played in the past 10 years.

I ran the download at my office and I got a zipfile. Winxp extracted it to IIRC 4 or 5 .rar files. I extracted the first rar file, the one with the catalogue in it and a lot of files were extracted in a new subdirectory. There’s a nfo file with instructions, open it with notepad. The game worked ok, but when the opponent did some thinking the game crashed.

    Edwin,

Yeah, it extracted fine. However, once I try to run any executable file in the game, whether I use Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode or not, nothing happens. The program tries to run, but nothing comes up on my XP machine. There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of instructions at the usual places (Google Usenet posts, CWG2 discussion boards, etc).
