DIXIE2 ONLY!!!!!!! Spotsylvania is a purely fictional OOB of what might have happened on May 7th, 1864 THE SETTING The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, sometimes simply referred to as the Battle of Spotsylvania, was the second battle in Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign of the American Civil War. It was fought in the Rapidan-Rappahannock river area of central Virginia, a region where more than 100,000 men on both sides fell between 1862 and 1864. The battle was fought from May 8 to May 21, 1864, along a trench line some four miles long, with the Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert E. Lee making its second attempt to halt the spring offensive of the Union Army of the Potomac under the command of Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Maj. Gen. George G. Meade. Taking place less than a week after the bloody, inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, it pitted 52,000 Confederate soldiers against a Union army numbering 100,000. Background After Lee checked the Union advance in the Wilderness, Grant decided to take advantage of the position he held, which allowed him to slip his army around Lee's right flank and continue to move south toward the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia. He already had troops on the move by the night of May 7, just one day after the Wilderness fighting ended. This OOB reflects the first movements of the Rebel and Yankee Armies to outflank each other at Spotsylvania Court House. The battle pits A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps against General Hancock's II Corps General A.P. Hills 3rd Corps consisted of 4 Divisions. 1st Division - under the command of Brigadier General Joseph Kershaw 2nd Division - under the command of Brigadier General Richard Anderson 3rd Division - under the command of Major General Henry Heth 4th Division - under the command of Major General Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox General Hancock's II Corps consisted of 4 Divisions. 1st Division - under the command of Brigadier General Francis Barlow 2nd Division - under the command of Brigadier General John Gibbon 3rd Division - under the command of Major General David Birney 4th Division - under the command of Brigadier General Gresham Mott NOTES It is meant to be played with the Dixie 2 Mod. I have tested it with the Dixie 2 Mod - un-patched. It will probably play with the patch - but thier have been some problems - previously mentioned in the MMG forum. SPECIAL CHANGES YANKS: All ammo wagons now have the LARGE US Flag instead of the the small cavalry flag. As do all Battery commanders. All Union battery's have the red crossed-cannon flag (which I personally like - and give them a distinctive look on the battlefield) REB'S All "available" Confederate State Flags have been attached to the particular regiment (state) they are from. I also personally like this look. Maybe you will to? All ammo wagons now have the LARGE Stars and Bars instead of the the small cavalry flag. As do all Battery commanders. UNITS The Union has slight edge in manpower - but the Rebs have more veteran units - this can be one by either side. Will you be good enough to win........................??
