Command: I Corps, Army of Virginia (Maj Gen Franz Sigel) Time: 6:30 a.m. 29 August 1862 Length of play: 3 Hours (0630-0930) Weather = 1000 yards visibility Embedded Mods: NONE Background: You are Maj Gen Franz Sigel, Commander, I Corps, Army of Virginia. Your corps has been on the road for many days--marching and countermarching--as General Pope tries to maneuver the Army of Virginia into a position to destroy Maj Gen "Stonewall" Jackson's Corps. Yesterday evening, your corps went into bivouac east of Groveton, Virginia in the vicinity of the 1st Bull Run battlefield. Situation: Recent intelligence indicates that Jackson's Corps of three divisions of infantry (Taliferro, Ewell, A.P. Hill) and Stuart's Cavalry Division is attempting to retreat west towards Thoroughfare Gap and thus affect a juncture with the main body of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Further reports indicate that Longstreet's Corps has been held at Thoroughfare Gap by Federal troops under the command of Brig Gen Ricketts. At sunset last evening, Brig Gen King's Division fought and bested Jackson's rear guard in the vicinity of Groveton. King's and Rickett's divisions are now in position to block any chance of Jackson retreating to the west; only the northern route across Bull Run at Sudley Ford remains. You must close it. Mission: "Attack the enemy vigorously at daylight." -- Maj Gen John Pope, Commander, Army of Virginia Forces Available: I Corps, Army of Virginia (Maj Gen Sigel) 16,400 men, 72 guns 1st Division (Brig Gen Schenk) 3,700 men, 18 Guns 2nd Division (Brig Gen Von Steinwehr) 1,500 men, 12 Guns 3rd Division (Brig Gen Shurz) 4,700 men, 22 guns Reserve Division, III Corps (Brig Gen Reynolds)(Attached) 5,500 men, 20 guns Cavalry Brigade, I Corps (Col Beardsley) 1,000 men (exhausted) Now is our chance to isolate and destroy Jackson once and for all. Success and glory are in the advance; disaster and shame lurk in the rear. Take Command! TIP: You will earn your General's pay on this one. Your corps is in a terrible muddle from your pre-dawn maneuvering to get ready for your attack. Take command of brigades and batteries to sort things out and to position yourself for your COORDINATED ATTACK. In other words, don't try Division commands until you have untangled your corps or else you are in for a major league traffic jam! Think...then click.
