Gettysburg Magazine Publisher Andy Turner pointed me in the direction of a fantastic new plan to raise 1,000 new subscriptions to Gettysburg Magazine by December 31, 2011. Best of all, if you help, you’ll be eligible to win some fantastic prizes!

Since Gettysburg Magazine relies on subscribers and does not contain ads, I commend Andy’s efforts to keep that the case for the foreseeable future. If you are interested in the Civil War and Gettysburg, I can tell you from first hand experience that Gettysburg Magazine offers some of the best new scholarship on the battle and campaign anywhere. Many professional historians as well as extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable amateurs have graced its pages. Detailed tactical discussions with amazing maps are the norm. Please read all about the offer below and head on to the Subscription Drive page to lend your support to this worthy cause.

Here are the details in full:

The Gettysburg Magazine Subscription Drive

Now through the end of the year we are having a subscription drive at The Gettysburg Magazine. For the past 22 years, The Gettysburg Magazine has brought its readers the best in scholarship on the Gettysburg Campaign. We have always done this without accepting paid advertising. For the magazine to be able to continue, we need to keep growing.

That’s where you can help, and win a great prize in the process. We are working to add new subscribers. From now until December 31, 2011, every time a person gets a new subscription, their name will be entered in our Subscription Drive Drawing. For those of you who are already subscribers, you can join in too. If you know anyone who would be interested in the magazine, let them know about us and encourage them to subscribe. If you refer them and they subscribe, you’ll get your name entered in the drawing as well. Another way to get entered is to purchase a gift subscription for someone. They make great donations to your local high school or library. This will get your name entered as well.

As you can see, there are several ways to get entered in our drawing. You can get your name in there more than once, and that can lead to gifts for you as well. If you bring in five new subscriptions through a new subscription, gift subscriptions, or referrals that subscribe, you get your choice of one of the following:

any six back issues of the magazine (not including out of print issues)

E. P. Alexander, Military Memoirs of a Confederate (hardcover)

Confederate Ordnance Manual (hardcover)

John N. Opie, A Rebel Cavalryman with Lee, Stuart, and Jackson (hardcover)

Capt. Charles A. Stevens, Berdan’s United States Sharpshooters (hardcover)

Glenn Tucker, High Tide at Gettysburg (hardcover)

John M. Vanderslice, Gettysburg Then And Now (hardcover)

Our goal in the drive is to get 1,000 new subscriptions by December 31st. With the great number of people interested in the Civil War in general and Gettysburg in particular (3 million people visit Gettysburg every year), this should be easy. So spread the word. Tell everyone you know. Tell all your Facebook friends about it and tell them to visit the Gettysburg Magazine Facebook page. With a little bit of word of mouth, with a touch of technology thrown in, we can spread the word about this quality magazine and ensure its continued publication for many years to come.

Now for what you’ve been waiting for: the prizes. The first week of January we’ll be drawing ten names from the entries. If we reach our goal of 1,000 new subscriptions, we will give out the following prizes:

4th through 10th names drawn: Each person gets a $50 gift certificate to Gatehouse Press, publisher of The Gettysburg Magazine. You can use this on Gettysburg Magazine purchases, Morningside book purchases, Civil War books by other publishers, used and rare books, and more. See our website www.gatehousepress.net for all that’s available.

3rd name drawn: This person will receive a $125 gift certificate to Gatehouse Press.

2nd name drawn: This person will receive a $250 gift certificate to Gatehouse Press

1st name drawn: The first name drawn will receive the Grand Prize: a three day stay in Gettysburg for two. The prize includes a two night stay in the Historic Gettysburg Hotel on the square plus $200 cash to be used as you wish. The dates of the stay are subject to availability at the hotel.

By receiving, giving, or recommending the best material being published on the Gettysburg Campaign, you can experience all Gettysburg has to offer for yourself. If you’ve never been to Gettysburg you have to go. If you’ve been there before, you want to go back.

If we should fall short of our goal of 1,000 new subscribers by December 31st, we will still draw ten names with the prizes being gift certificates to Gatehouse Press as follows: 1st: $250 gift certificate, 2nd: $125 gift certificate, 3rd $75 gift certificate, 4th through 10th: $30 gift certificate.

Not really, although they did 150 years ago.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gray-clad cadets from South Carolina’s historic military college fired cannons Saturday on a barren, wind-swept island on Charleston Harbor to re-enact the 150th anniversary of a key episode leading up to the Civil War.

The event recalled what some consider the first shots of the war – the 1861 firing on the steamship Star of the West that was trying to reach Fort Sumter with supplies and 200 federal troops. Cadets manning a battery on Morris Island hit the ship and forced it to turn back.

Sumter was never resupplied and the Union garrison surrendered after a Confederate bombardment the following April, the episode considered by most the first engagement of the war.

They were not quite the first shots of the war. A few hours earlier the guards at the Pensacola Navy Yard had fired at “lurking figures” nearby. So far as we know, nobody was hit, but a round shot fired by the cadets did hit the Star of the West, causing it to turn back.

One of the cadets on the guns was a young man named Samuel Pickens, a nephew of the state’s governor. When the war began Pickens got a commission as a lieutenant in the Confederate regular army. Assigned to the Twelfth Alabama as adjutant, he eventually won election to major and eventually became colonel after the death of his predecessors.

As mentioned in the article, the flag of the Citadel has several battle streamers, which are awarded for participation in a battle or campaign. The Virginia Military Institute also has one for the battle of New Market.

There is one other college whose ROTC detachment has a battle streamer. Trivia points for identifying the school and the battle.

My article on Sir Joseph Whitworth is out in the new issue of Civil War Times. It’s a very much expanded version of a post I did a couple of years ago and delves more into the man’s prickly personality as well as his rifles and other accomplishments.

I mention but do not really get into labor (or labour, if you’re across the pond) conditions in the nineteenth century. I did mention them here in a review of Deborah Petite’s Women Will Howl where I looked a the preference for more easily exploited free labor over slaves.

Slavery was certainly evil but conditions for the working man, woman, and child were not exactly idyllic either. As I pointed out in the above review, child labor was common. The Daily Mail has a review of Childhood And Child Labour In The British Industrial Revolution, by Professor Jane Humphries. It makes for harrowing reading.

The tunnel was narrow, and a mere 16in high in places. The workers could barely kneel in it, let alone stand. Thick, choking coal dust filled their lungs as they crawled through the darkness, their knees scraping on the rough surface and their muscles contracting with pain.

A single ‘hurrier’ pulled the heavy cart of coal, weighing as much as 500lb, attached by a chain to a belt worn around the waist, while one or more ‘thrusters’ pushed from behind. Acrid water dripped from the tunnel ceiling, soaking their ragged clothes.

Many would die from lung cancer and other diseases before they reached 25. For, shockingly, these human beasts of burden were children, some only five years old.

It only gets worse from there. Clearly the Industrial Revolution, which enriched all of mankind, had a price, and Charles Dickens didn’t tell the half of it.

I recently received an email from Anita Collins, whose daughter is in a New Jersey Girl Scout Troup. The girls received a large collection of Civil War magazines that they had planned to donate to a local nursing home, but the nursing home already had plenty of magazines. At that point, Anita contacted TOCWOC – A Civil War Blog asking how best to sell these items. The girls plan to use the money raised to visit a historical site, a very worthy cause. Luckily for you, I asked Anita to give TOCWOC readers first shot at purchasing the magazines. Anita’s email and magazine listings follow. If you’re interested in purchasing one, some, or even all of these, leave a comment below and I’ll get you into contact with her.

Dear Brett,

Thank you for this opportunity to connect with TOCWOC – A Civil War Blog.

Two Girl Scout Cadettes in NJ are trying to achieve their Silver Award (similar to steps toward a Boy Scout Eagle Award). Their community service project is to help improve the lives of residents in a Morris County nursing home.

A local history teacher donated his collection of civil war magazines to the girls, but the nursing home said they have enough magazines. The girls decided to use this opportunity to raise money for the troop to go on a historic site field trip by selling the magazines to Civil War history enthusiasts.

Can TOCWOC – A Civil War Blog readers help?

The magazines are in excellent condition and were well cared for. If there was a page crease noticed, we said the condition was very good.

Attached are the list of magazines we have for sale including Blue and Gray, America’s Civil War, and Civil War Times Illustrated.

Thanks for your help!

Anita

Source: W.W. Greener, The Gun and Its Development (1910)

Google Books now has Life magazine in their collection, and among the issues is a reunion of aged Confederate veterans in 1947, who got a considerably more respectful treatment than they’d get now.

Speaking of old Confederates, here’s a look at the survivors at the turn of the century, including “Old Pete” Longstreet (above), William Bate, Joe Wheeler, Dabney Maury, Fitz Lee, and many more.

UPDATE: Flags seem to be much in the news lately, the latest is supposed to be the “Big Red” flag of the Citadel cadets that flew over their battery as they fired at the Star of the West. Found in Iowa, of all places.

The red palmetto flag, a symbol of victory in that battle, became a powerful symbol for the state’s military college. The school adopted a replica of the red palmetto flag as its “spirit flag” in 1992 and called it “Big Red.” But nobody knew, until now, what happened to the original flag.

The school has found what almost certainly is the original, Civil War-era “Big Red” in a museum in Iowa. The flag was donated to the museum by a Civil War veteran from Iowa in 1919, and has been sitting in a storage closet for nearly a century.

The State Historical Society of Iowa, which owns the flag, and a history committee from The Citadel Alumni Association have determined through forensic and historical research that the flag in Iowa is very likely the one that flew on Morris Island on Jan. 9, 1861.

The Citadel battery fired four shots at the Star of the West, which was attempting to reinforce Fort Sumter. The second shot struck the boat, and although it did little damage convinced it to turn around. One of the cadets on #2 gun was young Sam Pickens, a cousin of the governor, who shortly afterward got a commission in the Confederate regular army. Second Lieutenant Pickens joined the Twelfth Alabama as adjutant, was elected major in the 1862 reorganization, and as the regiment’s leaders fell in battle ended up as colonel and commander the next year, becoming one of the war’s many “boy colonels.”
