New 1864 Diary of 148th Pennsylvania Soldier Published

Editor’s Note: This blog entry was cross-posted at The Siege of Petersburg Online.

I recently received a care package from Bill Black, who has been hard at work with Carolee Michener in editing the diary of Ithiel B. Snyder of Co. G, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry.  The 148th belonged to the 4th Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, Army of the Potomac, and was involved in the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns during the time frame of Snyder’s record of events.  The diary covers May 1-December 31, 1864, and the original is in the possession of the Venango County (PA) Historical Society.  Bill contacted my through my Siege of Petersburg site a few months ago to let me know the diary was almost ready for publication.  The pamphlet weighs in at a little over 50 stapled pages.  A introduction sets the stage for the diary, and several appendices offer useful information on terms used in the diary as well as maps of the events Snyder describes.  The forts around Petersburg, for instance, are carefully listed and noted on a map of the area.

After glancing through the diary, I suspect my page on the 148th Pennsylvania at the Siege of Petersburg Online will gain some additional information sourced from the diary.  I hope to have a more detailed review up soon at TOCWOC – A Civil War Blog and The Siege of Petersburg Online.

The diary is available for $6.00, tax included, plus mailing costs.  Copies may be purchased by contacting the Society at:
