Brett,

Probably the only book that's covered the subject in any depth is Benjamin Blied's 1945 book "Catholics in the Civil War." There are others, but at best they devote a chapter to the subject.

Thanks,
Donald Thompson

This should be an interesting book. Every major Christian denomination split along sectional lines, a split that remains to this day. The Catholic Church being the exception.

Many years ago, I was at a CWRT lecture where the speaker gave an interesting story on this subject. Although the Catholic Church did not split, the bishop of New Orleans wrote a letter to the Pope condeming the bishop of Boston for blessing the Union troops from Boston. The bishop of New Orleans had done the same for those in his diocese. A copy of this letter is at the Confederate Museum in New Orleans, which I hope to visit someday.
