Don,

I'm glad you liked my Antietam list. Stay tuned, because on July 1-3, 2009 a bunch of bloggers, including me, will be posting our Top 10 Gettysburg Books. The final results will be tabulated and posted here at TOCWOC. It should be an interesting experiment.

brett, you list is very good. i have read only two books on antietam. sear's and priest's. i recently bought two of the books you suggested, murphy's gleam of bayonets and gallagher's book the antietam campaign. i have browsed through both books and i am well satisfied with both choices. thanks for your suggestions. don

Scott,

Honestly, my analysis is pretty similar to yours. I can't say anything bad about Murfin's book, but later authors seems to have done Antietam better and with more detail.

What's your opinion on James Murfin's 1960s book A Gleam of Bayonets? It was the first Antietam book I read as a pre-teen and I must have read it a dozen times or more (the pages started falling out of the old paperback). I agree the newer books are better, but Murfin's remains a classic in that it was the first exhaustive look at the campaign that I knew of.

Your analysis, Brett?

Thanks Jim! Harsh is my own personal favorite, but I dropped him a few spots in this list because of the Confederate-centric viewpoint (which Harsh freely admits for those unfamiliar with his work) and his unorthodox but fascinating "what did Lee know and when did he know it" approach to the campaign. If anyone who is already familiar with the battle asks me for only one book, Harsh would be it. I hope his health allows him to eventually create the "Union companion" to Taken at the Flood which is similar to Sounding the Shallows.

Brett
I think you have a terrific list for someone who wants to learn about the battle of Antietam to start with. I am glad to see Harsh on your list. He is tops in my list.
Regards
