I read Hess's book doing research for a computer game project and definitely found it worthwhile. It's an odd book, since EVERYTHING is looked at from the perspective of field fortifications. Case in point, it goes on for a number of pages about Chancellorsville, but doesn't mention Stonewall Jackson getting killed -- after all, that had nothing to do with field fortifications!
