Terrific research, and I see the Globe Tavern on your map, above! I will be visiting the NY Military Museum in late March and will go over the casualty ledger that is on their website (referenced above). It is a little confusing that "Yellow Tavern " are the only casualties that ledger shows for June 22nd for the NY 63rd Inf., , while the Captain Watts report mentions a loss of 25 wounded and missing upon the Jerusalem Plank Road line. Perhaps the Museum can shed some light on all this.

Mark,

There is definitely a Yellow Tavern in that general vicinity. See this site for instance which shows Yellow Tavern as an alternate name for the nearby Battle of Globe Tavern. It's possible a detachment of the 63rd was not with the main body on June 21-23, thus the differentiation between Jerusalem Plank Road and Yellow Tavern. Anyone know?

PS If you're interested in more on the Petersburg Campaign check out my new site Beyond the Crater: The Petersburg Campaign Online.

That seems to make sense. But I also have come across the 63rd Regiment at Yellow Tavern on June 21-23, according to the NY State Military Museum website, taken from New York in the War of Rebellion, 3rd ed, Frederick Phisterer, Albany: J.B. Lyon Co., 1912. The ledger shows that the NY 63rd Infantry had: 1 officer died of wounds, 2 enlisted died of wounds (my great great grandfather?) Is this a different Yellow Tavern than one I have found to be at the Battle at Richmond in May 1864? Could this Yellow Tavern have been in the vicinity of Jerusalem Plank Road on 6/22/1864?

Mark,

According to Dyer's Compendium, the 63rd New York was definitely involved in the Battle of Jerusalem Plank Road. In addition, Ed Bearss' unpublished manuscript on the battle shows the 63rd's Brigade (Capt. R. Maroney's 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, II Corps, Army of the Potomac, the famous Irish Brigade) was on on the extreme left of the Union II Corps' line, and was overwhelmed at the start of the battle. Captain Alexander Watts' report #38 in the Official Records, Vol XL, Part 1 gives a brief description of the 63rd's part in the battle.

I have recently researched that my great great grandfather was a private with the NY 63rd Infantry and was wounded on June 22, 1864 at Petersburg. His left leg was amputated and he was sent home as a 1st Lieutenant and died in September of that year. I just located his grave outside of Albany, NY. I believe the 63rd NY Infantry may have been present at Jerusalem Plank Road on 6/22/1864 - can anyone confirm that?

John,

thanks for that. I had heard some of the Confederate records for the late war period had been burned on the retreat from Petersburg, but I didn't realize that included the Jerusalem Plank Road fighting specifically. When life settles down and gets less hectic, my plan is to collect regimental histories of the units which participated. My hope is that I will gain a better understanding of the fighting in that way and more.

In doing some research on Mahone at Carlisle Barracks several years ago I was told by Dr. Richard Sommers that the wagon containing much of the Confederate reports from the Jerusalem Plank Road Battle were burned during the retreat from Richmond.
