Civil War Talk Radio: December 16, 2005

Air Date: 121605
Subject: Female Soldiers in the Civil War
Books: Lincoln’s Avengers: Justice, Revenge, and Reunion after the Civil War & All the Daring of the Soldier: Women of the Civil War Armies
Guest: Elizabeth D. Leonard

Summary: Dr. Elizabeth Leonard, author of Lincoln’s Avengers and All the Daring of the Soldier: Women of the Civil War Armies, covers topics from the Lincoln assassination to the participation of women soldiers

Brett’s Summary: Elizabeth Leonard covers female Civil War soldiers and Joseph Holt in this episode of Civil War Talk Radio.  Dr. Leonard’s book on women soldiers in the Civil War sheds light on an overlooked topic.  She estimates there were around 1000 female soldiers who fought in the conflict, though she admits it is very difficult to pinpoint a number in a case like this.

Most of the second half of the show covered Joseph Holt, Judge Advocate General during the Lincoln Assassination Trial.  Holt obviously fascinates Dr. Leonard, and she openly admits this during the interview.  Holt had an obsession with trying to prove Jefferson Davis was ultimately responsible for the assassination of Lincoln, but Leonard says Holt never could prove this, and she believes Davis did not ultimately have much if anything to do with Lincoln’s death.

Civil War Talk Radio airs most Fridays at 12 PM Pacific on World Talk Radio Studio A. Host Gerry Prokopowicz, the History Chair at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, interviews a guest each week and discusses their interest in the Civil War. Most interviews center around a book or books if the guest is an author. Other guests over the years have included public historians such as park rangers and museum curators, wargamers, bloggers, and even a member of an American Civil War Round Table located in London, England.

In this series of blog entries, I will be posting air dates, subjects, and guests, and if I have time, I’ll provide a brief summary of the program. You can find all of the past episodes I’ve entered into the blog by clicking on the Civil War Talk Radio category. Each program should appear either on or near the date it was first broadcast.
