Civil War Talk Radio: June 10, 2005

Air Date: 061005
Subject: Don Troiani: Picturing the Past
Site: Historical Art Prints
Guest: Don Troiani

Summary: Civil War artist Don Troiani discusses his work.

Brett’s Summary: Don Troiani discusses the research he has to do to make a painting historically accurate. It is quite different than what an author might research. Troiani, for instance, needs to find out what color horse a person was riding or what type of uniform a certain officer wore at a particular battle. Troiani goes on to talk about some of the work he did on the movie Cold Mountain, his move to get into historical miniatures because he believes most current manufacturers aren’t accurate enough. Mr. Troiani has a penchant for speaking in the third person (i.e. “What do you think of this Mr. Troiani?” Answer: “Well, we think…”), and he apparently doesn’t have a very high opinion of literally any of his competitors other than Keith Rocco.  Despite these two minor issues, I still found it to be a pretty interesting hour.

Civil War Talk Radio airs most Fridays at 12 PM Pacific on World Talk Radio Studio A. Host Gerry Prokopowicz, the History Chair at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, interviews a guest each week and discusses their interest in the Civil War. Most interviews center around a book or books if the guest is an author. Other guests over the years have included public Historians such as park rangers and museum curators, wargamers, bloggers, and even a member of an American Civil War Round Table located in London, England.

In this series of blog entries, I will be posting air dates, subjects, and guests, and if I have time, I’ll provide a brief summary of the program. You can find all of the past episodes I’ve entered into the blog by clicking on the Civil War Talk Radio category. Each program should appear either on or near the date it was first broadcast.
