Ugh.  Where do I begin?  This movie was the result of the studio disliking Paul Schrader's slower (though IMHO superior) Exorcist prequel.  They scrapped Schrader's version and replaced him with Renny Harlin.  Harlin proceeded to give the studio what they wanted in more "scares" (if crappy CGI jackals and poorly done jump scenes are scary to you) and "action".  Skarsgård plays an Indiana Jones-like Father Merrin in this one, and he quickly and rather unconvincingly regains his faith near the end.  In addition, there was a bit of an unnecessary twist involving exactly who was evil in this one that added absolutely nothing to the story.  I encourage people to watch this one and Dominion (Schrader's version) back to back to compare for yourself.  I would be willing to bet that most people will find Dominion to be the better film.  This movie, despite the souped up "action", had me literally falling asleep near the end.  I had to go back and rewatch to see what happened at the end.  This one is a rental at best, or you might pick it up as part of the Exorcist Box Set available from Amazon above.  I don't advise buying it on its own.  It's not worth it.
